Sixteen aspiring young women in the Engineering Program at Lee’s Summit West High School attended the Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IGED) 2019 on February 22nd. The event is hosted by the Kansas City Section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE-KC). These future engineers had the opportunity to interact with over 500 other high school girls, women engineers from various college programs, professional women engineers, and STEM related women professionals from construction management to Sheri A. Blauwiekel the Keynote Speaker and Executive Vice President, Chief Operations Officer, Shared Services at Black & Veatch.
The event included table chats with professional women engineers in over twenty disciplines of engineering and a variety of college and workforce company booths. The girls were able to get valuable information from all these great women working it the fields that interest them. They competed at engineering design challenge where they designed and build a mechanical grabber to pick up and move as many paper balls of their color in 30 seconds to a marked zone.
LSWHS Engineering Girls represented the Titan family proudly, had a great time, and are looking forward to attending again next year. If you would like to see more about this wonderful event search http://swe-kc.swe.org/iged.html for past, present and future events.
